SUMMARY:Walter Brueggemann talks with John McKnight & Peter Block
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday October 2\, 2018\, 1 p.m. Eastern \nFree Webinar: Another Other Kingdom\, Departing the Consumer Culture . . . into What? \nThe Abundant Community is hosting a special edition of Conversations with John and Peter on October 2nd. Their special guest will be world famous biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann who also co-authored John and Peter’s most recent book\, An Other Kingdom: Departing the Consumer Culture.\n\n“John\, Peter and Walter are focusing on what it would mean to live in a culture beyond the consumer world. Part of this is to make distinctions about what is neighborhood-serving development and what is empire-serving. They will talk about the biblical injunctions against the displacement of people and places in the name of land development\, often called gentrification. Also the futility of system and institutional reform and what is the alternative. It is a conversation\, spontaneous and unpredictable\, and we will open up to whatever you would like to explore with these three old friends.” \nFind out how to join this Zoom webinar here: http://www.abundantcommunity.com/home/events.html \nIf you can’t join the conversation live\, it will be archived for listening or downloading later.

SUMMARY:Jubilee and the Consumer Economy – Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Economics of Compassion Initiative will host a free Community Forum and Conversation\, “Jubilee and the Consumer Economy”\, on December 7\, 2016\, at 6:00pm with Old Testament Scholar and Theologian\, Dr. Walter Brueggeman\, and Author of “The Abundant Community”\, Peter Block. The event will be held in the Huenefeld Tower Room at the Downtown Cincinnati Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. The event will also feature community advocate\, Dureka Bonds and Reverend Thomas Hargis. \nIn Cincinnati\, there is an initiative which seeks a local economy\, served and measured by the well-being of all its citizens. One part of this effort is about the Old Testament idea of a Jubilee Year. Every seven years and every seven times seven years the debts are released. Historically\, this includes resting the land\, gleaning of the harvest and in these times forgiving the debts of the poor. The covenant begins in our personal lives and demands an in-depth reflection of our relationship with money\, debt\, the economy as we know it\, neighborhood\, community and the common good. \nDr. Walter Brueggeman will give us perspective on the inconvenient truths of what people ignore about the bible in relation to money. The Jubilee Forums will engage and explore the landscape of moral confusion and sacred obligation. It is a project of consciousness and commitment. Yet\, the journey quickly expands to creating a local coalition in Cincinnati of the faith community\, neighbors and neighborhood leadership\, philanthropists\, social entrepreneurs\, independent businesses\, government\, corporations and social service institutions to support local economic productivity to several vulnerable neighborhoods in Cincinnati. \nPlease join us on December 7\, 2016\, by registering on the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2016-jubilee-forum-tickets-28642996975 \nEconomics of Compassion Initiative is a Cincinnati-based organization\, 501(c3)\, of thought leaders\, pastoral leaders\, business professionals\, community leaders and advocates working to create and support a resilient economy for all citizens. Our special commitment is offer people on the margin of the current economic system more control over their lives. \nPlease contact the Director of Operations for the Economics of Compassion Initiative\, Derek Peebles at derek@econofcompassion.org for more information on the event and how to get involved with the Economics of Compassion Initiative. The Downtown Cincinnati Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is the venue for this event and not a sponsor of the Initiative.

SUMMARY:Peter Block: Creating a Compassionate Economy
DESCRIPTION:A VERY SPECIAL SESSION : August 31\, 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM \nFrom ZingTrain.com: \n“The ZingTrain Speaker Series is a suite of thought-provoking presentations featuring experts sharing their wisdom on various aspects of the business world. \nPeter Block has deeply influenced the way we work at Zingerman’s. His ideas on Stewardship and Leadership have changed the very core of how we work. It is with much excitement (and no small measure of nerdish glee) that we welcome Peter for a very Special Edition of our Speaker Series. \nIn his characteristically cogent and convincing style\, Peter Block will share with you his vision for a Compassionate Economy\, and the work he has been doing on this front in Cincinnati. An economy that works for all\, even the most persistently challenged people and neighborhoods. An economy that gauges its vitality with more human spirit than the measures of annual income\, GDP\, crime\, schooling and the like. \nAnd here’s the best part – drawing from his new book\, An Other Kingdom: Departing the Consumer Culture*\, Peter will concretely focus on the fundamental shift in narrative and action we can each embrace in order to realize this Compassionate Economy. \nJoin us! Much as his ideas have changed Zingerman’s approach to business\, we are convinced that Peter will change the very core of how you think about the economy and consumer culture we live in.”
