Peter Block and John McKnight look at transformation as a process of departing from the consumer culture. This does not mean changing jobs or places. It means changing the nature of the work without having to leave.

In this conversation McKnight shares insights from the work of Dr. Jerome (Jerry) Miller. Miller attempted to reform a juvenile correctional system and then decided to close the 11 reformatories and take a new approach for the well-being of his clients.

Block and McKnight share other examples of leaders who are reimagining how to engage with community. They also welcomed participants from the live video to share their thoughts and questions. Watch:

Quotes:

“We’re starting with the notion that reform doesn’t really change anything, it just makes what we’re doing more efficient, less costly. We’ve adopted the notion, or newly experimented, of departure.” – Peter

“In a profound way I think the great lesson that he (Miller) has to offer, and a lot of the community initiatives involved, is recognizing that we are the primary resource for the engagement of our people who we lived with and we created and we should be responsible for.” – John
